Caroling at Southminster

During this holiday season, we would like to spread seasonal cheer to our neighbors at Southminster Retirement Community. On Wednesday, December 20 from 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm the children of Cameron Wood are invited to come caroling through the halls of Southminster and wish our neighbors a happy holiday. Along with their parents, the children will spend 10 to 15 minutes singing the following five Christmas carols in three "neighborhoods" within the community: “Deck the Halls”, “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, “Jingle Bells”, “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

IMPORTANT: If your family is interested in taking part, please RSVP here. For those that sign up, we will email you copies of the songs that we will sing so you can practice at home (we may even coordinate an impromptu "playdate" rehearsal). Due to limited space, the caroling is limited to 25 children.

To further spread holiday cheer, carolers are encouraged to dress in festive attire to really bring holiday spirit to our elder neighbors. We hope the children of Cameron Wood will enjoy this opportunity to give back during the holiday season and bring cheer to the residents of Southminster.

CW Turkey Trot

Work for that meal! Join CW resident families for the annual Turkey Trot, on Thanksgiving morning! The event will begin at 9 AM at the clubhouse parking lot. There will be a 5K, a 1 mile walk and a children’s dash. Prizes will be based on age group (AG) and overall finish (OF). Walkers, runners, adults, children, strollers, and dogs are welcome! The event is FREE to residents and guests!

To sign up for the Turkey Trot and for details on volunteering, etc., click here: Turkey Trot Sign Up Form.
Have questions? Contact Andrew Swistak: aswistak@yahoo.com.

Friendly Trash & Recycling Reminder

Neighbors, please put out trash, yard debris, and recycling no earlier than the evening before pickup. It is a violation of a city ordinance if it is placed out sooner than the day before. You can find more information about garbage prep and pickup here. Thank you!

Small Business Saturday

As you start tackling your holiday shopping list, consider supporting your local merchants. Many are located right near Cameron Wood, and several can be found inside Black Lion - including CW Sponsor Nelly's Naturals. It makes the giving season that much richer when we can give back to our neighborhood. Happy Shopping!

The Giving Season

CW is a big-hearted neighborhood! We are proud to have so many residents taking part in charities and fundraisers during the holidays. To keep things organized, we will be putting a list of them all in a single post on our CW Blog. This makes an easy reference for residents looking to give, and at the same time will prevent too many emails and messages hitting our inboxes (who needs more of those?!).

If you have a charity or fundraiser you'd like us to list and share, please email me at webmaster@cameronwood.com. We'll be adding to it and sharing it throughout the season.

New Web Changes

We've made our website more user-friendly! With the addition of our CW Blog and other new web features, we want to be sure residents can access the information easily and that our site is user-friendly. For this reason, we've removed the log-in prompts from many of our pages.

We have more new web features rolling out in the New Year, so stay tuned!

Stay Safe This Season

As we approach the holiday season of good times and giving, there are several other details we want to be sure not to overlook. For lots of great information and tips on holiday crime prevention, see the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Newsletter here

Cameron Wood is a big-hearted neighborhood! We have so many charities and fundraisers going on, all organized by CW residents. We'd like to put them all in one place so everyone has a quick reference. They are:

  • Krist Longley's Angel Tree: "Please click on the button below to view information about this family of 10 that I have grown to love over the years. Please sign up and help me love on the Cunninghams! Thank you in advance!" Sign up here: Angel Tree Project 2017

  • Mark Norman's fundraiser for Chef Darius: "As an employee of Johnson & Wales I felt that God had put me in Darius' path. His story is similar to others who come from poverty: being raised by his grandmother along with two sisters (one older and one younger), dealing with financial, educational and social issues." It's getting lively in Cameron Wood! With the slight chill in the air (well, last week, anyway) and the sound of leaves crunching, we are lining up activities and can't wait to celebrate FALL! You can expect our paper Newsletter in your mailbox next week, but in the meantime, here are some events coming up:

OKTOBERFEST

It's time for brats, beer, and fun! Our annual and much-anticipated OKTOBERFEST is happening on Saturday, October 14th at the CW ball field. See the details above. We hope to see you there!

PUMPKIN FEST

Grab your little ghouls and bring them on over to the CW Clubhouse parking lot on Sunday, October 29th. Kids of all ages can come and decorate a mini-pumpkin just in time for Halloween. Pumpkins, decorations and a small snack will be provided for all neighborhood kids in attendance.

If you have any questions or would like to help with the CW Children's Committee, contact Ashley Swistak at: ashley.swistak@gmail.com

CW ADULT HALLOWEEN PARTY

The annual adult Halloween party will be at the CW Clubhouse on 10/28/17. For more information, go here: CW Adult Halloween Party

TRICK-OR-TREAT

Mark your calendars for trick-or-treating! On Monday, October 30th from 4-5 pm Southminster has invited school-age children from Cameron Wood to participate in their Trick or Treating event.
It’s preferably for elementary school kids, but middle school children can also come as long as they have a parent with them and have their costumes on. Guests will enter at the front door and there will be residents throughout the community offering treats for the kids. It’s a great way to celebrate Halloween and spread some joy at Southminster.

BOO Your Neighbors!

What is all this talk of "BOO"ing your neighbors?! It's a fun way to surprise your friends and get in the Halloween spirit. Many thanks to CW resident Elizabeth Corcoran for breaking it down for us in this blog post. She also made a great point on our CW Facebook page: it doesn't have to be just for kids! You can make an adult "BOO" package with some spooky spirits, too. Read the original blog post, here: BOO Your Neighbors

A message from Officer Beth Jackson, CMPD:

Response Area One Residents-

Our hope is that everyone had a GREAT summer. Some of you already started the school routine this week, on Monday August 28th CMS will be starting. Please be advised traffic will be in full force and there will be kids at bus stops, more vehicles on the road (especially student drivers) and a sea of yellow buses. Please make sure you are paying attention and driving slowly through the communities and school zones.

BACK TO SCHOOL NC Safety Tips (ncdot.gov)
  • Cross in crosswalks.
  • Watch for and obey crossing guards.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Be careful crossing multiple lanes of traffic.
  • Make sure each lane of traffic is clear before you cross.
  • Pay attention. When walking, avoid distractions like cellphones.
  • Obey signs and signals. • Cross the street where you have the best view of traffic.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from the road as you can. ADULT AND TEEN DRIVERS
  • Know when to stop for school buses.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Obey all posted school zone speed limits.

  • Before turning, be sure the path is clear.
  • Slow down near bus stops, schools and playgrounds.

  • A driver who passes a stopped school bus and strikes someone will face a Class I felony and be fined a minimum of $1,000.
  • The penalty increases to a Class H felony and fine of $2,500 if someone is killed. BACK TO SCHOOLNC For more information, visit WatchforMeNC.org to learn more about what you can do to keep roads safe for everyone.

Hi all! Below is a guest post from one of our CW residents, Jonathan Miller. Take it away, Jonathan!

Hello neighbors !

In a little more than two weeks I'll be riding in my 19th consecutive MS150 event, the 2017 Bike MS Colonial Crossroads ride.

Several years ago I picked up a motivational idea from another rider; he had pinned one of those "I'm riding for" notes on the back of his jersey. He had quite a few names on his list. He even laminated it so rain, sweat, etc. would not damage his list! So I've been creating an annual riding list for several years now.

Please consider making a donation to the National MS Society AND send me the name(s) of family or friends living with multiple sclerosis so I can add them to my 2017 "I'm riding for" list.

2017 event date:  June 3-4
Donations are tax deductible within IRS rules.
Make checks payable to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

If you work for a company that matches employee gifts, please submit the appropriate paperwork to claim that matching gift.

And if you prefer real checks and snail mail, let me know and I'll send a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Here's the address/phone/website for the Virginia-West Virginia MS Society chapter:

Thank you note from TreesCharlotte...

Dear Cameron Wood community,

A special thanks to each of you for your participation in Saturday’s TreesCharlotte NeighborWoods event.  You are helping to expand and diversify Charlotte’s urban forest and we appreciate your involvement.
Thank you!

Also, a special thanks to those who volunteered for the event, both helping to plan and run the event.  You made possible the distribution of more than 165 trees to neighborhood residents and common areas – thank you!
If you have not yet planted your tree(s) please plant them immediately.  Attached (Check the CW Blog for 'Tree Planting and Care') are proper planting and tree care instructions for your reference or check out this video

The keys to proper planting are:
  • Proper hole depth – the root flare, where the trunk begins to flare out to form the root structure, should be an inch or so above the natural soil line.
  • Proper hole width – the hole should be twice as wide as the root ball.  Tamp the dirt in around the tree firmly to prevent the tree from slumping.
  • Eliminate circling roots – make sure the roots are not circling.  Cut any circling roots.
  • Mulch and protect – keep a ring of mulch around the tree and protect the tree from any contact with mowers or weed eaters.
  • Water – water your tree immediately after planting and every week with 5 gallons.  Water twice a week during dry summer and fall weather.  If you don’t water your tree it will probably die.
Please take good care of your trees – they will love you for years to come.  Click here for additional tips on trees care.

Check out photos of the event on our Flickr account.  Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter to keep up with all our events.  We would love for you to share you pictures with us by tagging them #treesclt.

At TreesCharlotte, we are committed to continuous quality improvement – please let me know of any suggestions you have for TreesCharlotte and how your experience could have been improved.

And lastly, you can track our progress and future events on our web site – all events are listed on our calendar.
Enjoy!

Be Courteous, Be a mindful neighbor...

As the weather continues to improve and more people enjoy the outdoors I wanted to remind residents of a few important items.

The first idea is simple:  clean up after your pets!  It's unfortunate that we have to continue to emphasize this requirement, which is both a city ordinance and a rule of common decency.

Second, it is essential that residents respect the right to quiet enjoyment of their neighbors.  Please be mindful of dogs being left out all day to bark.  Below are links to our city and county noise ordinances, and to the covenants and by-laws available to you for reference on the CW website.
Last, please mind the boundaries between the HOA owned property and private property.  This is particularly important around the pond and ball field.  Residents should not be walking on, or cutting through, private property.
