Festival in the Park 2010 - Since 1964, Festival in the Park has been bringing good music, good art and good times to Charlotteans and visitors from around the world. The 46th annual event will take place September 23-26, 2010.

Charlotte Stimulus Information- The City of Charlotte has created an electronic newsletter, "Stimulating Times," dedicated to informing citizens about projects and programs that the City is seeking to be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants. The newsletter will be published as needed, and editions will be posted at the City's Economic Recovery Information web site.  Go to the site to learn about specific stimulus funding programs and grants the City has applied for and how Charlotte residents are benefitting from stimulus funding.

The Charlotte Observer:  Charlotte's daily newspaper is published each day and delivered to your home by approximately 6 a.m. A comprehensive paper with International and national news, other sections include local, special interests (like faith, gardening, and cooking which are highlighted one day per week), sports, classifieds and real estate. It's a great paper that deserves your subscription consideration.

Mecklenburg County offers a cost share program for those folks that live on or near McMullen Creek. McMullin Creek is the creek that run thru Cameron Wood and the Cameron Wood Pond. If your land backs up to the creek or you have a severe slope to your yard and significant runoff falls into the creek, you could possibly qualify for a cost share program. The Urban Cost Share Program is an incentive-based program to help landowners in approved watersheds address natural resource concerns on their properties. Approved applicants are reimbursed 75% of the cost, up to $3,000, associated with installing approved Best Management Practices on their land. For more information and an application click HERE

The Arts and Museums of Charlotte

Actor's Theater of Charlotte: Founded in 1989, Actors Theatre of Charlotte is the regions only professional theatre company solely dedicated to presenting plays for mature audiences. They serve our community by bringing stories to life that are entertaining, relevant and thought provoking. 

Afro-American Cultural Center: The Afro-American Cultural Center (AACC) of Charlotte is a distinguished, 33-year old institution that preserves, promotes, and presents African-American art, history and culture through comprehensive programs and presentations in the visual arts, performing arts, and through innovative educational programs.

Bechtler Museum of Modern Art:  The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art will open January 2, 2010.  Located within the new Wells Fargo Cultural Campus which includes the Mint Museum of Art, the Knight Theater and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts+ Culture.  When opened, It will be the only modern art museum in the region.

Blumenthal Performing Arts Center:  The North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center ( Blumenthal PAC ) is your source for all the best performing arts events in Charlotte.
 
Carolina Voices:  Carolina Voices, a volunteer choral arts organization, enriches, educates and entertains our diverse community through the quality performance of choral music. Comprised of more than 110 volunteer singers in a given year, membership is by audition and interview. 
 
Charlotte Children's Choir:  The Charlotte Childrens Choir serves the community by providing quality music education with the goal of attaining the highest level of artistic excellence in choral music performance. The Choir serves children between the ages of 8-18. 
 
Charlotte Civic Orchestra:  The CCO is a fully functioning, volunteer based 75-piece orchestra made up of local musicians, many of whom are professionally trained. Players are selected through competitive auditions that take place throughout the year. 
 
Charlotte Culture Guide: is Charlotte-Mecklenburg's comprehensive, up-to-date website featuring arts and cultural events and attractions.
 
Charlotte Museum of History:  The Charlotte Museum of History, an educational organization, captures and shares the stories of the Charlotte region from settlement forward through exhibits and programs. The museum collects, preserves, researches, and interprets regional artifacts, including the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County, the 1774 Hezekiah Alexander Homesite.
 
Charlotte Symphony:  The Charlotte Symphony is the largest and most active professional performing arts organization in the central Carolinas, employing over 100 professional musicians, 64 on full-time contracts. The Orchestras principal home is the acoustically acclaimed 1,970-seat Belk Theater of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
 
Charlotte Concerts:  Charlotte Concerts, formerly Carolinas Concert Association, brings world-renowned classical music and performing arts to the region.  Celebrating their 80th season, they build on a rich legacy as the citys first presenting arts group. Their main mission is to sponsor, promote and present concerts featuring world-renowned performing artists while sponsoring arts education outreach initiatives which cultivate an understanding and appreciation for the performing arts.   
 
Children's Theatre of Charlotte:   Offers many productions both in theatre and at local schools for creative and theatrical talents of children and families of diverse backgrounds.  They have a large volunteer base and offer interships.  They also povide affordable educational drama experiences and community outreach opportunities.
 
Charlotte Youth Ballet:  Produces professional quality ballets that combine professional international dancers with local ballet students.  Open auditions for dancers grades 3-12.
 
Community Arts Project:  Formerly called The Creative Arts Exchange.  The Community Arts Project offers a full service visual art center for the people of the Lake Norman area. They support the growth of artists of all levels of ability through art education. They seek to bring together the diverse communities of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, northern Charlotte, Concord, Mooresville, Lincolnton and beyond through art events and activities.
 
Discovery Place:  Discovery Place is a regional science museum targeted to a broad age range.  The Charlotte location has an I-Max Theater.
 
Historic Charlotte:  The mission of Historic Charlotte, Inc. is to actively promote historic
preservation and to encourage, support and coordinate the activities of history and heritage groups throughout the greater Charlotte region. 
 
Historic Rosedale Plantation:  Historic Rosedale Plantation is dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of the Southern Piedmont through the preservation, exhibition, interpretation and preservation of the architecture, decorative arts and lifestyle of the19th century Catawba River Valley region.
 
Levine Museum of the New South: Levine Museum of the New South is an interactive museum housing the nation's most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War Southern history. 
 
McColl Center for Visual Arts:  McColl Center for Visual Art is the leading center for the advancement of creative capacity for artists and the public.  Their mission is to advance artists, community and the creation of contemporary art through residencies, exhibitions, outreach and education.
 
Mint Museums:  The Mint Museum of Art originates and hosts major national and international exhibitions and features public programs including daily tours, seminars, lectures, family day festivals, and adult and children's art classes. Resources include two research libraries, a slide and videotape library, teacher training programs, in-school programs and a facility rental program.
 
NASCAR Hall of Fame:  the 150,000-square-foot NASCAR Hall of Fame is an interactive, entertainment attraction honoring the history and heritage of NASCAR. 
 
N.C. Dance Theatre:  Founded in 1970, North Carolina Dance Theatre is the oldest professional ballet company in North Carolina. Today, North Carolina Dance Theatre has an established national reputation for artistic excellence and is widely regarded as one of Charlottes premiere arts organizations. Under the artistic direction of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride, the company has attracted superb dancers and built a versatile and diverse repertoire ranging from full-length classical ballets to innovative contemporary works. The company has an annual budget exceeding $4.5 million and employs 24 professional dancers.
 
Opera Carolina:   Opera Carolina is the premiere professional opera company in the Carolinas, presenting four main stage productions, the annual Valentines Concert Love Notes, and acclaimed Education & Outreach Programs that reach more than 75,000 citizens in North Carolina, South Carolina and northern Georgia each year.
 
Theatre Charlotte:  Theatre Charlotte, formerly known as The Little Theatre, is Charlottes community theatre and has been creating drama since 1927. Theatre Charlottes mission is to create outstanding theatre opportunities relevant to the people of the Charlotte region. To fulfill this goal, theatre Charlotte presents a Main Stage series and a second stage series known as Stage 501.

Mecklenburg Audubon Club:  Originally established as a local bird club in the late thirties by Elizabeth and Eddie Clarkson of Wing Haven, the Mecklenburg Audubon Society became the first official North Carolina chapter of the National Audubon Society in 1970. Mecklenburg Audubon has a long, productive history of bird conservation in the Charlotte area. The current membership of over 1,000 members comes from all walks of life but has one common interest - protecting habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Charlotte Trolley:  In June, 1998, the Charlotte City Council allocated $16.7 million in public funds to create a two-mile rail transit corridor through Uptown Charlotte and Historic South End which would accommodate both vintage trolley and eventually light rail transit. Trolley proponents believed this investment would stimulate economic development along the corridor, and that property tax values would be high enough to repay the investment in eight years. In fact, it took only four years, and the City's investment paid off even before the Uptown component of the trolley line was established.
